Description

[MEXICAN-AMERICAN WAR]. Letter from a soldier in the 1st Regiment Alabama Volunteer Army of Occupation Mexico describing the Battle of Monterrey, incl. hand-drawn map. Camargo, Mexico. 8 October 1846.

18.25" x 11.125". Letter from a soldier in the 1st Regiment Alabama Volunteer Army describing the Battle of Monterrey addressed to Major Thomas B. Cooper of Cherokee County, Alabama. Dated October 8, 1846, the letter includes a hand drawn map both in ink and pencil depicting the position of the forces of the United States along the St. John River three miles beyond its junction with the Rio Grande at Camargo. The letter alleges that the Alabama Volunteers fought valiantly, that the Texas Rangers only performed picket duties, and describes the losses suffered by the Tennessee, Baltimore, and Mississippi regiments in the battle itself. Further, the letter describes the desolate landscape in which its author found himself and the poor condition of a friend suffering from sickness. The map itself shows only the most basic disposition of Army units, and does not show the movement of the battle itself. An intriguing firsthand account of the Battle of Monterrey depicting a soldier's dislike both of the conditions in which the Army lived, and his unfamiliar surroundings in Mexico.
